I've started a similar project with my Grandmother. In 1971, she did an 80+ day "trip around the world". In visiting with her this Christmas (she's 83 now), I decided I needed to get this trip documented electronically. I've started with Google Earth, and have her trip plotted out "roughly". When I visit her this summer, I plan to add scanned versions of her pics from that time period, audio accounts of the various stops, and whatever else we can fit in to complete this electronic record of such an event.

Yes amazing isn't it? I love the potential it offers for having students corresponding with each other from afar, such as with epals. I wish we'd had this kind of access a few years back when I worked with four elementary school classes on a salmon summit project. The students from Washington state, Ketchikan, Alaska, Prince Rupert, BC, and Vancouver, BC, who participated would have gained so much.

Wow - this is a form of geographic storytelling - can we coin a fancy name like "storymapping" or something? I have been playing around with ideas but you've managed to get me really excited. Cleverly presented with the icons etc. I love maps because they are easily shared like this.

If only I had my class of ESL students - we used to publish stories called "coming to the USA" and now, we could track our stories just like you did. Humm, maybe my next SFSU class can introduce themselves this way.

thanks for the inspiration

Google has made doing so many things related to learning and connecting so much easier. This is a brilliant idea for teaching and learning.
A great way to remember, trace, even actualise the past using a most modern and supremely versatile tool. Thanks

Thanks for sharing this, Bernie. Terrible tragedy. When I saw your tweet, I immediately followed your link to the map to see where it was. I have kids and a grandkid in San Diego, so it was comforting to be able to follow up so quickly. At the same time, I'm terribly sorry for the loss that others experienced today.

Hi Bernie...found your blog as I was looking for all kinds of websquest as I'm in the process of creating on for my Clad classess. I starting reading your blog and got engaged. I was a student of SDSU back in 1985....I was on semester break visiting my cousin in Hawai'i and I never went back to finish school. I got my teaching credential from U of Hawai'i.

Hi Bernie,

Don't say Jarbas. Or say it. For some weird reason, many people hear Jarbas and say Harbas. At SDSU there are a couple of old transcripts calling me Harbas. And two weeks ago, an invitation for a seminar in Uruguay reached my e-mail with Harbas. Next time I will tell them to call me J. Would anyone or any machine shitf that to H? Abraço, Jarbas.
