Behind the Book
Use the web to learn more about the time and place in which a work of literature is set.
Deepening ones understanding of a work of literature by studying its setting.
Can be used in conjunction with the reading of any story, novel or play.
In most cases, this wouldn't work for fantasy or science fiction. The places to be studied should be real.
Several different tasks can be used within this design. One can examine the historical accuracy of a work (as in The Real Johnny Tremain). Or design something within the setting (F. Scott Fitzgerald Party). What holds these disparate lessons together is that they begin with the study of resources about a single piece of literature.
