Introduction

Write an exciting introduction that will immediately excite and engage the learners. Tie it to background knowledge they already have, and give reasons for the importance of the activity. Explain the topic, the research required, and the end product. Attempt to enthrall them with the idea of taking on the personality and character traits of a person, and assure them that they will become the expert on that person's decisions and reasoning. The person can be a specific person (such as Abraham Lincoln) or a character (a generic farmer who has lost his farm during the Dust Bowl).

Task

[Give an overview of the entire project and what the end result should be. Describe the roles to be assumed and tie them to the chosen subject. Set the scenario for the panel discussion, dinner party, or TV program. ]

Process

  1. This will happen in two stages. First, the students will research the sites you have chosen for each character, record the information, and begin to try to think as their character would.
  2. The next stage will be the panel discussion. The teacher or another adult should conduct the discussion. Questions should allow the characters to state positions and defend them on topics that relate to an era or a common concern.

Evaluation

Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.

Conclusion

Put a few sentences here that summarize what they will have accomplished or learned by completing this activity or lesson.

You might also include some rhetorical questions or additional links to encourage them to extend their thinking into other content beyond this lesson. To foster the habit of lifelong learning, give them links to additional information here that they can pursue on their own.
