Introduction

[Since the core of this lesson is to examine two different experiences, begin with a dramatic excerpt from one or both of them. Draw the learner in by asking them how they'd feel under such circumstances.]

Task

[Tell them that they'll be creating two parallel diaries or journals. Describe that the diaries must be historically/factually accurate, and that the parallelism is important to pay attention to. Specify whose diaries they will be writing, and how long they will be. List any important criteria that you will be looking for.]

Process

  1. Show (link to) a diary written in the form that you would like.
  2. Provide background information on the two settings and/or individuals to be studied and direct all learners to read them. Summarize in class discussion.
  3. Divide learners into groups, each of which will be subdivided into two subgroups. Provide a template which structures the diaries so that they cover the same number of days. The template should include prompts for each day at a general level in a way that guides the learners to see the parallels and differences between the two settings.
  4. Share the results across groups by having learners alternate reading aloud their diaries from the same days.
  5. Debrief by asking learners to note which parallels were described most often, and which were less commonly described. Make sure to point out inaccuracies gently so that no one leaves the room with an errant understanding of history.

Evaluation

Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.

Conclusion

Put a few sentences here that summarize what they will have accomplished or learned by completing this activity or lesson.

You might also include some rhetorical questions or additional links to encourage them to extend their thinking into other content beyond this lesson. To foster the habit of lifelong learning, give them links to additional information here that they can pursue on their own.
