Introduction

On Halloween, part of the fun is pretending for the evening to be someone or something else. We can have the same kind of fun with school subjects by putting ourselves into someone else's head for awhile. In this WebQuest, you are going to pretend to be X.

Task

[Describe that the learner is to create a diary as if written by someone else. Describe the particular person, or type of person, or time and place of the person that you are requiring as well as the format that the diary will be written in.]

  1. Show (link to) a diary written in the form that you would like.
  2. Provide background information on the setting and/or individual to be studied and direct all learners to read them. Summarize in class discussion.
  3. Divide learners into groups, each of which will read about a different aspect of the person's life and the world they lived in. Provide appropriate links (and off-line materials) and a set of questions to guide each group.
  4. Bring the group members together to work on their diary. Provide a template which structures the diaries so that they cover a certain number of days. The template should include prompts for each day at a general level in a way that guides the learners to fully portray the person they're studying.
  5. Debrief by asking learners to read excerpts of their diaries aloud and use this to lead a discussion about the life and times of X.

Evaluation

Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades. You may want to have separate rubrics for individual and group work.
